Printed by Comin da Trino or his successor? Device on t.p. (2-tiered fountain with putti) used also in Orazio Augenio's De sanguinis missione libri tres (Venice, 1570), assigned in BM STC Italian, 1465-1600, p. 61, to Comin da Trino (imprints known 1540-1573; cf. Pastorello, E. Tipografi, editori, librai a Venezia, no. 114). The identical device and a recut version are used respectively in Venice 1576 and 1589 eds. of Briganti's Italian translations of G. de Orta and Monardes, in 1576 without name of publisher or printer and in 1589 with statement: Appresso Giouanne, & Andrea Zenari; a 1582 reissue of the 1576 text, without name, has a variant fountain device, with putti heads (cf. Arents, G. Tobacco, 20, 20A; Arents SA 0094). The present device is illustrated in Zappella, G. Marche dei tipografi e degli editori, v. 2, fig. 559, where it is assigned to G. and A. Zenaro (1589-1597); in v. 1, no. XCIX f (p. 179), this type of fountain device is reported for B. Cesano (1549-1553), Comin and the Zenaros. An apparently identical device is reported for Comin (1558) in Vaccaro, E. Marche dei tipografi ed editori, p. 256. Small floriated initials on leaves 57r and 103v identical to those used in Comin's ed. (1573) of Castigliano's Il cortegiano, leaves 120r, 172v; large historiated initials perhaps from the same series in the two works. Cf. Pastorello for occurrence in a 1565 Comin imprint of the phrase "Al segno della salamandra"; salamander device and address subsequently used by Damiano Zenaro (1573-1599)
Signatures: 1-4⁴, A-3Q⁴ 3R⁶ (cf. Registro, leaf 253r)
Headpieces; historiated and floriated initials
