About this work

Description

Extrapulmonary Pneumocystis carinii infection This is a low power view of a section of tongue from an HIV-positive adult with Pneumocystis carinii infection. It shows inflammation and islands of pink material replacing the muscle of the tongue. H&E stain. Extrapulmonary pneumocystosis is not common but can affect almost any organ of the body. The fungus disseminates haematogenously from lung. The commonest location is the hilar lymph nodes. See also images W0043282 and W0043283 for specimens from the same patient.
