Description

Hic liber fuit transcriptus de Vechero [i.e. J. J. Wecker]. Additio ad primum librum arcanorum [etc.]: in Latin and Italian. Compiler's holograph MS. On fol. 54v is a pen-drawing of 'Trabes mutuo se substinentes'; and in the unfoliated section, a diagram for measuring heights by the shadow cast by the sun, and a drawing of a bowl. The extracts from Wecker consist of medical receipts and 'secrets', technical receipts, practical jokes, etc. This part is entirely in Latin. The 'Additio' (Fol. 80) is partly in Italian and contains similar material, but also includes, notes on the virtues of herbs, etc; 'Somnium interpretatio Patriarchae Nicephori [Gregorae] Constantino-politani' in Latin verse (4 ll.); 'Adnotata in materia superstitionis contra maleficia seu sortilegium' (6 ll.); 'Herbarum in terrestri superficie cognitarum alphabetico ordine digestarum nomina' (13 ll.); notes on cosmetics, especially hair-dyes; alchemical and chemical receipts, etc. At the end 'La seconda parte della 'Somma dei secreti' [by Timoteo Rosselli'?]. The extracts from Wecker are dated 1630, and the 'Additio' 1635.

Physical description

1 volume 1 l. + 80 ff. + 72 ll. (last bl.). 4to. 20 x 131/2 cm. 19th cent. paper covers. A number of leaves have been cut out, ff. 4 and 5 are torn away and ff. 8, 11 mutilated, ff. 55, 62 are wanting. Small hole in last three leaves and in fol. 6, many corners and margins frayed.
