Notes

Collation includes added engraved t.p. and final blank leaf. Plates comprise 2 folded tables and 3 folded woodcuts.
Copy 2 Supplier/Donor: A. Geddes. Note: 3 folded woodcuts wanting. Binding: Human skin bound by Lortic, with gilt panelled spine and gilt borders, cover ornaments and fillets. On tipped-in leaf: authenticating description signed by Dr. L[udovic] Bouland [MD Strasbourg, 1865]: "Ce curieux petit livre sur la viginité ... me paraissant mériter une reliure congruente au suject est revetu d'un morceau de peau de femme tannée par moi-meme avec du sumac." Mentioned by Paul Combes in the journal 'Intermédiaire des chercheurs et curieux' in 1910, with note that Bouland had acquired the piece of skin while a medical student, from the body of a woman who had died in the hospital in Metz. Subsequently owned by Alistair Livingston Gunn (1903-70); lot 165 in the sale of his collection at Bonham's, 11 Oct. 1979. Bought there by Annabel Geddes, founder of the London Dungeon. No marks of ownership in either case.
