This programme follows the work of consultants and dental specialists at King’s College Hospital, London. Dr Serpil Djemal analyses the teeth of a family of eight. Presenter Dr Chris van Tulleken conducts an experiment in the family’s home to analyse how different eating times and snacking effect acidity levels in the mouth. Presenter Jasmine Harman visits a patient who has odontophobia. Van Tulleken joins a clinical trial run by Professor Ian Chappell, which explores the effects of gum disease on general health by developing early stage, reversible gum disease in its volunteers. Dr Serpil Djemal performs a tooth extraction on a patient under sedation. Van Tulleken discusses tooth decay and the effects of cow’s milk on children’s teeth. He then explores the sugar content in everyday food and drink. Harman introduces a patient with shrinking teeth due to grinding. Van Tulleken explains the different acidity levels in everyday drinks. Harman explores ways to prevent the development of odontophobia in childhood. Djemal uses advanced computer technology to analyse how well people brush their teeth. Harman visits Professor Monty Duggal at Leeds Dental Institute, who performs a transplantation procedure in which a pre-molar is extracted to replace a patient’s central incisor.
