    to the examination of their proposal, it is best to start with an understanding of what is be¬ hind the crisis through which marriage is seen to be passing. First of all we need to understand just what is meant by a social crisis. So long as habit continues to operate without excessive diffi¬ culty, men and women go on living as did their fathers. When, however, a new situation arises so that habit no longer works smoothly, people have to cease their automatic behavior and give some attention to the causes of their difficulties. As a result they scrutinize their condition, critically examine their traditions and customs, and here and there experiments are undertaken in the effort to meet with greater success the new situation. Thus habit breaks down and has to be replaced by thought and conscious questioning of practices that once went on automatically.
