About this work

Description

The result of my enquiries into the vital conditions of the operatives usually employed in the cotton manufacture, but now out of employment [in Lancashire]. Addressed to the Medical Department of the Privy Council. Author's holograph MSS. The 49 ff. copy has many corrections, and is a first draft. The second copy is a longer version, with fewer corrections. At the time of writing this Report, the cotton-workers of Lancashire were almost totally unemployed, as a result of the American Civil War, whereby the supply of cotton from the Southern States had been cut off. Buchanan's findings were incorporated in the Fifth Report to the Privy Council in 1862.
