He has not been content with publishing the results of his own practice, but has, by a circular to his medical brethren, gathered a large mass of experience, and given the whole in this ele- gant volume. ‘There can no longer be any excuse for allowing woman to pay so horrible a penalty for her civilization. FROM THE PROVIDENCE DAILY JOURNAL, DEC. 1848. This is a very handsome volume upon one of the most interesting and im- portant subjects of medicine. Of all the marvellous inventions of the age, perhaps none is more wonderful than the application of ether for the prevention of suffering. The use of ether in midwifery naturally occurred to physicians soon after the properties of this remedy were discovered, and it has already been employed in many cases with the most satisfactory results. The views of so eminent a writer, illustrated by so great a range of cases, will naturally attract the attention of the profession, and will form the standard work upon the sub- ject. It doubtless embodies the most authentic facts and the justest deductions which have appeared upon the subject. There is but one way to arrive at cor- rect conclusions in medicine, or indeed in any other science; and that is from observation and experiment. The motto which the author has affixed to the titlepage is as true as it is modest: ‘Give me the facts, said my Lord Judge: your reasonings are the mere guess-work of the imagination.” ‘The above are for sale by Gladding & Proud. Like the intro- duction of inoculation or of vaccination, what is necessary to the general use of etherization is a Jarge series of experiments. At first, with much difficulty, a few firm believers, and still fewer enterprising votaries of science, submit them- selves to the untried dangers of a new process. Their success draws on others; the circle spreads, — First kindred, neighbors, friends, it will embrace ; A country next; and next, the human race. Thus the fearful railroad soon becomes the highway for all travellers. Here are a great variety of cases, reported by the very highest authority. From this book, as a new starting point, the subject will again go round the world. We shall report to our readers, from time to time, what the reviewers in London, Japan, and Siberia, say of it. It will everywhere be read with in- tense interest. It is printed and bound in a style which does credit to the publishers (Tick- nor & Co.
