    taken away with as much ease as the crystal in e itself. This however is a very mistaken idea.—Mr. Ware. Unless the capsule has been completely sepa- rated from its connexion with the membrana vitrea and ciliary processes, either by disease, which is seldom the case, or during the opera- tion, which is still more rare, so much only of its anterior portion, as from its opacity prevents the rays of light from falling on the retina, should be removed. This will be attended with more or less difficulty in proportion as disease may have changed the capsule into a membrane of more or less elasticity or toughness. Some distinctions of color have been pointed out by oculists as characteristic marks of the degree of consistence assumed by the capsule. They are too numerous to be mentioned, and none of them can be relied upon as certain. The mode of operating to be here proposed is, that a flat thin needle be introduced through the cornea; with this the secondary cataract should be attempted to be broken, and removed into the anterior chamber of the aqueous humor, where it may either be suffered to remain until dissolved and absorbed, or removed through the small incision in the cornea, as the operator nia}^ think proper.
