    PREFACE. 'J' iiitei'vuis (luring the last twelve years we have ^ ^ written many papers on the surgery of joints and deformities. Urged by our friends, we now publish some of these in a more permanent form. The l)ook is merely intended for house surgeons and others who, knowing our methods, desire some guidance as to the principles which underlie them. We have therefore, for the time being, contented ourselves by reprinting old essays, having no intention to submit them to the profession generally or to the revieAver's pen.
