THERE is scarcely a systematic work on mid- wifery, in which mention is not made of laceration of the perinaeum : a casualty which not unfre- quently takes place, particularly in first-births, when the foetus is passing, or about to pass, through the os externum. The description of accident of this nature that more usually occurs, and which is sometimes un- avoidable, is a simple rent in the perinaeum, com- mencing at its anterior edge, and running either di- rectly or obliquely backwards.
