In the background are two towns in Sudan (Sinkat and Tokar) where Egyptian garrisons were under attack by the Mahdi. With the agreement of Gladstone and the endorsement of Chamberlain, General Gordon was sent to Sudan to organize the Egyptian withdrawal, an appointment with which Marriott disagreed. In 1884 Marriott left the Liberal Party, led by Gladstone and Chamberlain, and joined the Conservative Party
