The annual report of an asylum, comprising as it usually es a statement of the year’s proceedings, with an account of the les treated, is doubtless interesting, not only to those immedi- jly connected with the institution, but also to the medical pro- sion. From the limited circulation of these documents, bow- er, a very indistinct idea is entertained generally of what is ;ually done in these establishments for the alleviation or cure of ianity. For statistical purposes, but little use can be made of •eport taken singly; the number of cases treated being so small entirely to preclude any inference being drawn as to the preva- lce curability, or mortality of the disease. In these circumstances, it has occurred to me that a brief ab- act of the reports of the public lunatic asylums of Scotland for 2 past year, giving an account of the total number of patients ated and dismissed, with their condition on admission and dis- arge, might be deemed not out of place in a Medical Journal, which appear many memoirs on medical statistics.
