Description
The monkey is dressed in elegant costume, with a cockaded hat, tiewig, cravat and bow tie, gloves and cane, the epaulets suggesting a livery
Most of the monkeys are rhesus macaques, although the one in the back is a capuchin and the monkey taking snuff a baboon
The subject was inspired by a fable by John Gay, which tells the story of a monkey travelling to bring polite manners home. The monkey is captured, serves a lady, becomes refined and escapes to join his fellows
