Throughout the series, some of Britain's leading scientific figures tell the stories of the people behind these innovations. In this part the focus is on the horrors and innovations of war. Richard Dawkins talks about Alan Turing who pioneered modern computer science. James Dyson celebrates the work of engineer Frank Whittle who invented the jet engine. Jim Al-Khalili shows how the discovery of radar by Robert Watson-Watt enabled the Battle of Britain to be won. Kathy Sykes explains how Paul Dirac paved the way for modern electronics and Paul Nurse tells the story of Alexander Fleming and his discovery of penicillin.
