About this work

Description

A fictitious event described in the Carlton House magazine. Two ladies (Lady Almeria Braddock and Mrs Elphinstone) fight a duel with pistols in Hyde Park, after Mrs Elphinstone accuses Lady Almeria of lying about her age (claiming that she is thirty years old when she was sixty years old). There may be an allusion to real people such as Lady Almeria Carpenter (1752-1809) or the actress George Anne Bellamy (1727-1788)--Major, op. cit.
