About this work
Description
Six years after the Chernobyl disaster, this programme examines the state of health of children living in the area and recalls events at the time of the explosion, the secrecy which left the citizens of Kiev totally exposed to the radiation cloud and the mass evacuation of many villages. At the Kiev Institute of Oncology children are seen suffering from leukaemia and other kinds of cancer and damaged thyroid glands. Basic medical equipment is in short supply. The film presents a tragic situation with little hope for those suffering from radiation sicknesses and a grim outlook for life in the foreseeable future in the contaminated region of Kiev and its environs.
