In the drawing, Saint Joseph sleeps; behind him is his flowering staff. Below the drawing are emblems of art: a palette, a page of a drawing book showing eyes, a mahlstick etc. At the foot, below Piranesi's imprint, is the severed head of John the Baptist (the name saint of Giovanni Battista Piranesi)
