    PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION That this book has not been written in vain I take it is evidenced by the facts, that two editions have been sold in America, that it has been translated into several foreign languages, and a third edition is demanded in this country. The book is in great part re-written. I have found it necessary to modify my opinion on some subjects in consonance with my own further experience, and likewise as new views have been opened to me by many able fellow-workers. This edition has grown, but, I hope, contains more information without losing its practical character. Throughout I have endeavoured to teach those who have not had the advantages for learning I have enjoyed, and I trust I shall hear from some pro- fessional brother that I have turned darkness into light for him, and that his increased knowledge has been practically useful. 25, Geosvenor Street, W. ; ^pril, 1879.
