    PREFACE TO THE NINTH EDITION The ‘editorial note’ which follows this preface was written sixteen years ago, and was designed to explain the origin of ‘ Pharmaceutical Formulas,’ and the basis adopted in com- piling it. Briefly, the idea was to bring together those formulas, whether for old or new preparations, which pharma- cists, and others in the drug-trade and allied businesses, have wanted at some time or other. Such needs have a striking tendency to recur, and it has been the aim of the author, in preparing successive editions, to satisfy fresh demands and keep pace with progress in the art of compounding. The utility of the volume was expressed by the late Dr. John Attfield, F.R.S., editor of the ‘ British Pharmacopoeia,’ in a note respecting the fourth edition, which was only about half the size of the present one. The note is reproduced in reduced facsimile on the next page. It is characteristic of the distinguished chemist’s style, being written with the self- copying ink which he always used.
