Description

Letter from Anthony Askew in Leiden to Dr. Richard Mead in London. The letter chiefly concerns Askew's emendations to Hippocrates: other writers alluded to are Dr. Clinch, who has recently published an edition of Rufus of Ephesus, and the German physician and philologist Daniel Wilhelm Triller (1695-1782). He also mentions introductions and advice that he has provided for "Mr. Dowdeswel."

Biographical note

Anthony Askew took his MB at Cambridge in 1745, then studied at Leiden and travelled before taking his MD in 1750. He became Physician to St. Bartholomew's Hospital and Registrar of the Royal College of Physicians. At his death he left an extensive library of books and manuscripts, particularly of classical texts. For further information see the Dictionary of National Biography. William Clinch published an edition of Rufus of Ephesus in 1726 and a Historiae Medicae in 1733. Abraham Gronovius (1695-1775) was Librarian at Leiden from 1741. Bernhard Siegfried Albinus (1697-1770) became Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at Leiden in 1718 and was a leading anatomist. William Dowdeswell (1721-1775) studied at Christchurch, Oxford, and at Leiden, and became an MP in 1747. He held several public offices, most notably being the Chancellor of the Exchequer during 1765-1766. For further information see the Dictionary of National Biography.
