In laying this translation before the British public, I think it right to state that I received very valuable assistance in preparing it from Professor Koch and from Dr Frosch, Professor Pfeiffer, and Professor Pfuhl, who work under him in the Institute for Infectious Diseases here. I have also to express my acknowledgments to the Editor of the Scotsman for his liberality in permitting the reprinting of this translation, which first appeared in the columns of that paper.
