About this work

Description

The inner surface of the small intestine is covered with millions of tiny folds called the intestinal villi. This scanning electron micrograph (SEM) shows part of the ileum in the small intestine and its leaf-shaped villi. This shape allows the villi to lie close together in an alternating pattern, increasing the surface area and absorption of nutrients. Biomedical Image Awards 1998.
