    <ier as merely heads for a more extensive bio- graphical composition, which he and the re- lations of the deceased expected me to pre- fix to the verses of our lamented young poet. But the narrative has so much of truth and nature—it is so just and so pleasing a deli- neation of that exemplary youth whose cha- racter was impressed by long intimacy on the heart and mind of his surviving fellow-stu- dent, that I should think myself guilty of in- juring the deceased, if I any ways deprived him of so becoming a tribute to his memo- ry. I therefore confine myself to this Pre- face, by which I am ambitious of introducing the young poet and his young biographer to the kind notice of the public. It seems to me to be a duty incumbent on the veterans of literature to encourage the activity and promote the reputation of studious and lau- dable youth; and that I may not appear, by an act of justice to the living, to shrink from expressing my sentiments of the dead, I beg leave to terminate this introduction by the following Elegy.
