About this work
Description
Parody of a painting by Edwin Landseer painted in 1840 and known as Trial by jury, or Laying down the law (painting at Chatsworth, Derbyshire). In the present version, Owen "lays down the law" of natural history to an audience of dogs, of which the dog in the left background has the features of Thomas Henry Huxley, known as "Darwin's bulldog"
