    OPENING ADDRESS by the President, FRANCIS T. KING. It is my pleasant duty, in behalf of the Trustees of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, to offer you a cor- dial welcome, and to express our high appreciation of the interest in our work which is manifested by your presence here to-day. It cannot be a matter of small or temporary im- portance that brings to this opening the chief exec- utives of our State, and our City, so many of our distinguished men in all branches of the public ser- vice, so many well-known professional men from distant cities and countries, and so many of our own most prominent and public spirited citizens; and it gives us a renewed sense of our responsibilities and duties to find that we are to give an account of what we have done in the past and what we hope to do in the future to such an audience as we see before and around us. It encourages us to hope and believe that the trust which has been confided to us is one not only of local but of national and even of international importance, and we have abundant evidence in the
