About this work

Description

Bible. N.T. Matthew 27.34-50; Mark 15.24-37; Luke 23.33-45; John 19.18-34. Christ is flanked by the sun on the left and the moon on the right. He is given a wooden rest for his feet to stand upon; they are perhaps nailed to it. Among the crowd appear to be nuns and a pastor, the latter kneeling at the foot of the cross. At its base, the cross is shown as a tree; a skull grins among its roots. The cross can be seen symbolically as the redeemed form of the tree of life; the skull is sometimes identified as Adam's; thus original sin is redeemed
