The doctor holds a medicine bag in his right hand and a cane in his left. He wears a fobwatch. The poster suggests that having a supply of the medicine Dr Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery in the home was equivalent to having the services of such a physician instantly available
Dr Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery was the name of a medicine created by Ray Vaughn Pierce and first sold by him when he arrived in Buffalo, New York, in 1866. It continued to be sold until at least 1935. See Allen, op. cit., and Leidy, op. cit. Dr Pierce's organization had an active branch in London at 3 New Oxford Street
