About this work

Description

Allen stands amid furnaces and vats, the central one being occupied by an old lady who spouts gold from her mouth. This is Mrs. Grizell, née Hoare, widow of I.W. Birkbeck of Norwich, who was, at an advanced age, to marry Mr. Allen. The other figures in the vats are personifications of Allen's various philanthropic tenets, ie. morality, abolition of the slave trade, etc. The alchemical procedure attempted is 'sublimation'. On the two bottles, left, are alchemical symbols, other bottles, right, contain "Cantharides" [Spanish Fly] and "Leeches wholesale". There is also a big box marked "Cash"
