About this work

Description

The figures of Fortune and Fame hover above the scene. Below the cliff stands Burdett on a piece of land holding a scroll inscribed 'Magna Char[ta] Liberty of Napoleon' while holding out his left hand to prevent Britannia from falling. A rock symbolises St Helena upon which a spotted sub-human Caliban-like creature sits holding a small image of Napoleon. In the foreground sits a woman personifying France (?) in classical draperies as she gazes towards St Helena. An inscription within the title reads 'Wilson scut deliver...sur le bord de l'Abeme [sic]!!!'

An appeal for the liberation of Napoleon. Burdett and others had opposed his exile to St Helena. Napoleon's cause was associated with that of the radicals, reform and the Queen, hence the image of Queen Caroline held by Fortune
