![EQ,UIDAE Equus asinus x Equus hemionus (contd.) Antonius O. 1951 ; Ko,—. 1890; Noenti,—. 1875; Przibram,H. 1910. X Equus hemionus hemionus Pallas [Kulan. Chigetai] Reciprocal crosses are possible. Opinions differ regarding the fertility of the hybrids. Skurgin reports that ^ hybrids between the kulan and the $ ass produced non-viable semen and that ? hybrids were sterile with both horse and ass. The gestation period of hybrid foals was 326-379 days. The hybrids were healthy but difficult to manage. Ackermann, К. 1898; Antonius, О. I934¿,' Gavazza, F. 19316; Lus, Ja. Ja. 1938; Rörig, A. 1903; Skurgin, A-. 1945. X Equus hemionus hemippus I. Geoffroy [Hemippe. Syrian Wild Ass] (? hemippe x ? ass. A cj hybrid was born in the London Zoo in 1883. Flower, S. S. 1929a. X Equus hemionus khur Lesson [Indian Wild Ass or Ghor-khar] Hybridization between the ^ donkey and the $ Indian wild ass is alleged. Ackermann, К. 1898. X Equus hemionus kiang Moorcroft [Kiang. Tibetan Wild Ass] c? kiang X ? ass. Two ? hybrids reported by Bronzini were normally viable but they were difficult to manage. A t? hybrid (direction of cross not given) was born in the London Zoo in 1920. Bronzini, E. 1949; Flower, S. S. 1929a. X Equus hemionus onager Boddaert [Persian Onager. Persian Wild Ass] (J onager X $ ass. The hybrids are larger and of better appearance than mules or asses. They are easily tamed, but probably could not be domesticated without prolonged selective breeding. Antonius reports that, of 3 asses served by an onager, one died during preg- . nancy, the second gave birth to a stillborn foal, and the third pro¬ duced a live foal on two occasions. One of the live foals (a was born after 366 days' gestation; the other (a ?) had a gestation period of 347 days. Both were intermediate in type. The ? was more turbulent than the The latter displayed libido when only a year old, but none of the ponies he served became pregnant. Antonius, О. 1944a*; Bauer, H. R. 1941; Flower, S. S. 1929a; Isunin, G. I., and Korovin, E. P. 1945*. X Equus przewalskii Poliakov [Przewalski's Horse] No offspring were obtained from matings between a Przewalski stallion and several she-asses, but a Przewalski x Mongolian horse $ hybrid produced 3 live offspring (one died after 24 hours) when mated with jack-asses. The triple hybrids appeared to be sterile. Lotsy, J. P. 1922. X Equus quagga J. F. Gmelin [Quagga] Reciprocal crosses between the ass and the quagga, a species now believed to be extinct, have been reported. The hybrids were prob¬ ably sterile. Lus, Ja.
