![4 GERCOPITHECIDAE Macaca irus (contd.) X Macaca mulatta Zimmermann [Rhesus Macaque] Reciprocal crosses are possible. The hybrids are said to be fertile in both sexes. (J crab-eating macaque x $ rhesus macaque. One of the hybrids reported showed precocious development. Two died 3-4 days after birth. The Fj hybrids are greyish in colour, tending to brown. In early youth they have the characteristic hair tuft of the crab-eating macaque, but this disappears during the first year. Year-old hybrids resemble the crab-eating macaque in conformation but are slimmer. They have a wrinkled face, a shortish snout, and a small tail. A ? hybrid at Hanover Zoo gave birth to a hybrid sired by her father. The young backcross died when a few days old. Yerkes gives an account of a $ hybrid which twice gave birth to a stillborn young. Geoffroy [Bonnet Monkey] (J bonnet monkey x ? crab-eating macaque. A ? hybrid was born almost completely covered with hair and with its eyes open. It was a fairly dark olive brown on the dorsal surface, especially in the middle of the back and on the head. The under surface was greyish- white and sparsely haired. The face was a reddish flesh colour. The hands were blackish. The crown hair was similar to that of the father.
