    PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION. This little volume has been reprinted many times, but has been revised only once since it was written. It is again out of print, and I have taken the occasion to rewrite a good deal of it, to add many practical hints, to answer some criticisms, and to insert considerable matter in regard to the treatment of obesity, the use of milk as a diet, and its effect on the excretions. I have also altered its second title so as more satisfactorily to describe its scope and purpose. Philadelphia, October, 1883.
