    New Hospital opened 1865, containing 18 beds. Dr. Bell appointed Surgeon. Priestman, John L. Siltzer, and J. Wolffsohn. Dr. Bronner was appointed medical officer, and Dr. Bell junior medical officer. Donations amounting to £183 and subscriptions to 100 guineas were at once promised. The first annual meeting was held in J anuary, 1858. During the previous six months 510 patients were admitted, and 66 operations performed. The number of patients increased rapidly, and during 1859 n0 less than 1043 new patients were treated and 203 operations performed, 100 of these being for squint. In 1863 the old building was found to be too small, and it was decided to build a new and modern hospital. The present site in Halffield Road was purchased. The foundation stone was laid in 1864, by Titus Salt, Esq., and the new building, containing 18 beds, was opened in 1865 by Charles Semon, Esq., the total cost being £5500. Dr. Bell was appointed surgeon in 1864, and Drs. Tacey and Marsdin assistant surgeons. At this period the number of patients from the outlying districts increased rapidly, and the committee were disappointed at the small returns in subscriptions, which did not cover the expenses incurred by the treatment of the patients.
