    FOREWORD Unity and continuity are the leading ideas which have determined the arrangement adopted in this new edition of the Handbook of Suggestions in its treatment alike of the individual pupil, the school, and the subject matter of instruction. The General Introduction deals with the school child, his natural and many-sided development, his reaction to his surroundings as a. complete personality, and his preparation through his school life for full membership of a modern community: Part II deals with the three stages which form the units of the Public Elementary School system, each an organic whole and each having its specific function to perform; Part III deals with the separate branches of the curriculum and shows how each is related to the main purposes of education and is developed continuously from the earliest stages to the end of school life. In reading this book teachers will naturally give most attention to. those sections of it which deal most directly with the particular type of school in which they are working, or the particular subject in which they are specially interested; but they will, it is hoped, find in each section of the book something that will help them to view their own work as part of the general perspective.
