Acquisition note

Mostly purchased from Charavay, Paris, in December 1927 (acc.67371), October 1928 and April 1929 (acc.63700), June 1929 (acc.67383), September 1930 (acc.63925), April 1931 (accs.64715 and 64716), July 1933 (acc.66363), January 1934 (acc.67097), September 1934 (acc.67126), and April 1936 (acc.69426). Other documents were purchased from Degrange, Paris, in July 1930 (acc.63453), September 1932 (acc.65659), November 1932 (acc.65667), and July 1936 (acc.69615), and from an unknown Parisian vendor in 1930 (acc.67391). Two of the documents have no known provenance.

Ownership note

Two of the documents purchased from Charavay (acc.67126) bear stamps of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, the collection of Napoleonic memorabilia accumulated by Ludovic Lindsay (1847-1913), 26th Earl of Crawford, which was sold at Sotheby's in 1925. This may indicate that they were acquired by Charavay at that sale before re-crossing the Channel following purchase by Wellcome.
