    KILNS. pears desirable, as the temperature can be better regulated than when shutters only are provided. It is a very great advantage for the floors to be uni- form in width, and straight; that is, as far as possible, the floors should form a rectangular parallelogram. Kilns.—The malt kilns, as before stated, should be placed at the end of the working floor. Yarious plans have been introduced, from time to time, for con- structing the floors, such as punched iron plates, wove wire, haircloth, &c., but by far the greater number of floors are now laid with tiles, and the manufacture of these tiles, by certain firms, has now reached a great state of perfection—the holes, 1200 to a square foot, are cut through exceedingly clean, no “ burr ” being left to check the free current of air. The tiles should be selected of a uniform thickness and of a perfectly level surface. Wire floors, if well laid, will last many years and will offer much less resistance to the air, as they give about 6900 holes to the square foot. The usual allowance is from 20 feet to 25 feet super, for pale malt—the height of the kiln floor above the firing floor being from 16 to 25 feet. According to description of malt to be dried, the arrangement of the firing must depend upon the opinion of the maltster—some preferring to have the firing place fixed with ordinary furnace bars, &c., whilst others consider it best to have the fires in movable furnaces.
