Description
Top, portrait paintings of four kings: Henri III, Charles IX, François II, Henri II. Below, two portrait paintings, of Pope Pius V and the Cardinal François de La Rochefoucauld, and between them a painting of Romans worshipping at an altar. At floor level, three closed cabinets on stands, holding animals and a clock, and with two small paintings above them. Cardinal François de La Rochefoucauld had been abbot of the abbey of Sainte-Geneviève, and had died and been buried there
Symmetrical composition in itself, also forming a symmetrical pair with pl. 5 (Wellcome Collection no. 35705i): in the present print, light falls from the left, there is a portrait of a pope on the left and a cardinal on the right, whereas in pl. 5 the light falls from the left, there is a portrait of a cardinal on the right and a pope on the left
