An episode in Hudibras by Samuel Butler. The dried or stuffed animals include a crocodile and a tortoise. On the table are a black cat and a telecope Within a cupboard hangs a human skeleton; nearby perches an owl. On the ground are a barking dog, a horoscope, a skull and a Jacob's staff or cross staff. Some of these motifs are derived from William Hogarth's engraving of this episode
