    The total number of infant deaths during 1955 was 21 and this was also the number for 1954. Sixteen of these deaths occurred in the first month of life. Whereas last year most of these were due to congenital malformations in the child, only four of these 16 deaths in 1955 could be assigned to these causes. Furthermore, seven of the 16 deaths occurring in the first month of life were ascribed to unknown causes or to conditions which can be only vaguely described, e.g.. prematurity.
