    PREFACE This Dictionary is intended to be a complete Glossary of German medical words in common use; it contains also a large number of terms employed in the ancillary sciences, particu- larly Chemistry, Biology, and Pathology. The only words which have been intentionally omitted are those which are spelt identically in the two languages, and in which no doubt as to the gender is likely to arise. To any one who will point out other omissions or inaccuracies, from which I fear that the most scrupulous care in revision cannot have rendered the work entirely free, I shall be sincerely grateful. In respect of genders there may be here and there an apparent discrepancy. This arises from the absence in German of a definite rule for the gender of imported words. Virchow always maintained —and I must confess that his view appears to me the more logical— that such terms should be of the same gender as in their native languages. Others, however, assimilate the gender to that of the German equivalent for the word. The former would say die Cervix, the latter—to correspond with der Hals—der Cervix. An interesting example is the German word for tubercle. Etymologically derived from the Latin tuberculum^ it should strictly be called das Tuberkel. In common parlance, however, it is brought into line with der Knoten, and is used in the masculine; but in von Duden's well- known dictionary we find die Tuberkel, corresponding, no doubt, with die Geschwulst. A further point on which confusion might arise relates to the dropping of mute letters.
