About this work

Description

Satirical illustration to an article intended to counteract the effect of the news of the capture of New York. Lord North is smiling as he holds up a dispatch beginning with 'My lord' and signed 'how'. Lord Bute and George III stand behind on the right. Two ministers point with amusement at the patriots, among whom is John Wilkes who raises his fist. A dishevelled-looking woman sits weeping holding the cap of liberty. Mansfield was not in North's cabinet but was sympathetic to his policies
