    ver in thofe days, fufficient evacuations had not been made; no violent exacerbation, or intermiffion, had happened. Befides* it was according to the fame pre- vailing idea too early in the fever; and the patient, who had been only ailing a few days, did not ap- pear to be in any danger. The method of treat- ment therefore confifted of an emetic, an aperient, faline mixture, and fmall dofes of antimonials. On the 17th Nov. 1768, I was appointed fur- geon of the Diligence Hoop, which was ordered for England, and failed in February 1769 ; but we did not get home before the beginning of April; foon after which the Hoop was paid off. The men belonging to the floop, before we failed, and all the paffage home, notwithftanding it was a very bad one, blowing fo hard that provifions could not be dreffed for them for nine fucceeding days*, were healthy. The medical practice in the Naval Hofpital at Port-Royal, which I had an opportunity to fee, did not differ materially from the general practice of this countryf. » We were nearly cast away upon Scilly. t Although the preceding cgses fell under the observation of the author, in the early part of his life, yet, as many of them were manag- ed (by much older practitioners than himself) according to the prac- tice of the times, it was thought proper to relate them as the first link of the chain of the work, that the reader might see what progress has since been made in medical practice. The learned and expe- rienced reader will therefore, it is hoped, without severe criticism, view the author’s design with liberality. PART
