About this work
Description
22 March, 1888. Wyeth to Burroughs Wellcome & Co. Replying to letter of 10 March, in which an unsatisfactory sample of Chlorate of Potash and Borax tablets was enclosed. "If the stock you have on hand is like the sample, of course the tablets will not do to send out" (p. 1).
22 May, 1888. Wyeth to Burroughs Wellcome & Co. Advises against adding hydrochloric acid to Dialysed Iron. "Under the circumstances, we think the only thing for you to do is to destroy the Dialysed Iron you have in stock, and charge the amount to our account" (p. 2).
26 June, 1888. Burroughs Wellcome & Co to Wyeth [typescript copy], stating that "the monopoly of the manufacture of compressed goods which we once enjoyed, and which you thought would be permanent, is now entirely broken up in this country...." Refers to manufacture in Manchester.
5 November, 1888. Burroughs Wellcome & Co to Wyeth [typescript copy]. In reply to letter of 26 October. "We are obliged to accept your written 30 days notice of termination of the agreement between us, and we understand that this closes our contract with you and that from the end of the 30 days we cease to pay you commission. Consequently we shall obey your request and return to you your compressing machines" (p. 1). Since Wyeth has refused to supply improved machines, BW&Co "have purchased machines from various makers" and have "invented machines on entirely new lines...." (p. 2). Letter "written by Mr Wellcome, as Mr Burroughs is in America" (p. 3).
5 November, 1888. Wellcome to Burroughs [typescript copy], summarising the position with Wyeth. "This termination [of the contract with Wyeth] has, as you are aware, been precipitated by your letters." Refers to labelling issues arising and "the patent of our new machine".
7 November, 1888. Medina New York, Burroughs to Wyeth [marked "Rough copy not sent"]. In reply to letter of 26 October. [4 sheets]
8 November, 1888. Lockport New York, Burroughs to Burroughs Wellcome & Co, objecting to Wyeth requesting the return of their machines. "If I thought there was any likelihood of your returning the machines I would wire you not to do so."
12 November, 1888. Wellcome to Burroughs [typescript copy], repeating text of "cable": "Burroughs - important letter from Wyeth answered. Copy posted to you seventh, don't conclude new deal before we consult".
21 November, 1888. Wellcome to Burroughs, noting Burroughs's message to not return the machines. "I await further advices [sic] from you in regard to the reasons for not sending them forward." Wellcome notes that their separate communications to Wyeth "differ very materially in some respects."
