About this work

Description

Lavater writes that "the nose alone is beyond all price. The upper lip advances too much, and the under is not much better designed. It is, in some measure, a fault of habit which recurs in most of Raphael's profiles"

We have three drawings of the same image in the collection; see frame nos. 9422R and 9424 for the others. Two were engraved and published on separate pages of the English edition of the book (9422R and this frame). 9422R shows the characteristics mentioned by Lavater; the other two have been altered by Holloway
