Herbes and plants and other roots. Admirable observations of strange cures [etc.]. Three members of the Lockyer family have apparently used this note-book. (1) Richard Lockyer, whose signature with date 'Ann[o] Domini 1674' is written inside the upper cover. His list of 'Herbes' extends from 'Agrimonia' to 'Lotus' only. The 'Admirable observations' begin at the other end of the book, this title being found on the verso of the 14th leaf. The cases are dated from 1675 to 1691. (2) Richard Lockyer [Junior]. This Richard Lockyer has written 'Richard Lockyer ejus liber' at the end of the 'Observations'. His script is that of a young man, and he seems to have been the writer of the list of drugs and their prices, which follow the 'Herbes' in the first part of the MS. These were probably written in the first half of the 18th cent. (3) Samuel Lockyer. This signature is found under that of the younger Richard in the form 'Samuel Lockyer ejus liber. January 1771'. He seems to have been the writer of the accounts and notes of personal and other expenses. One entry among these is headed 'Bills in 1776' and the first item is 'Leyton Parish'. These accounts are dated from 1770 to 1790. Musgrave's 'Obituary' has an entry for Samuel Lockyer, 'Apothecary of Low Layton' who died on 13 September 1790. Written inside the upper cover is also the signature in pencil of 'S. Cowit 1858'. Inserted loose is a used envelope with Reform Club crest, containing holograph notes by Sir D'Arcy Power [1855-1941] of some of the cases mentioned in this MS.: the stamp is postmarked 10 January, 1923.
