The report shall also contain tabular statements (on forms “to be supplied by the Local Government Board, or to the like “ effect), of the sickness and mortality within the district, classified “ according to diseases, ages, and localities,” The report I now have the honour to place before you is made in compliance with the above quoted order, and is of necessity somewhat lengthy. It will, I think, be convenient, and conduce to uniformity, to adhere to the plan I have hitherto adopted in these annual reports, and the reports is therefore commenced with the usual formal record of the births and deaths occurring in the city for the past twelve months. During the year 1881 the number of deaths registered for the wdiole of the city was 307 j this is inclusive of the 19 in the Infirmary and 31 in the Workhouse, and calculated on a popula- tion of 19,822 (Census, 1881), will give a rate of mortality of 15-4 per 1,000, THE LOWEST ON RECORD. The Births numbered 532, giving a birth-rate of 20-8 per ],000. With reference to sex 279 were males, and 253 females. Of this 532 Births, 40 were illegitimate—the position in life of the mother being registered chiefly as “ domestic servant.’ Three less than reported last year. The following table epitomises the ages at which the deaths occurred throughout the city :— Deaths in the City, including Infirmary and Workhouse, from January ls< to December 31s<, 1881. The grouping into various ages in the above Table is in accord ancc with the ages fixed in the tables furnished by the Local Government Board, which are duly filled in, and accompany this report.
