About this work

Description

A painting in Rita Simon's Traditional Massive style, depicting a man playing a pipe, a tree, a dog. According to Rita Simon the artist, "was a depressed old woman at risk, an inpatient, had probably made suicide attempts. Here, space is very tenuous, the three things are not really related, feeling is cut off. This style indicates a danger of self destruction. Research in this area would have helped diagnostically".

Reproduced in The symbolism of style, fig 9.4, with title "The piper".

The title has been taken from information on the verso.

The date has been taken from other items in the section.
