About this work

Description

Lettering identifies the subject as Sainte Apolline (Apollonia) although the attributes of Saint Apollonia are not shown. According to the catalogue of the Musée du Louvre (loc. cit.), the subject is the Virgin Annunciate from a dispersed polyptych from the church of Sant'Agostino in Perugia, commissioned from Perugino in 1502, and subsequently destroyed ("la Vierge de l'Annonciation déposée à Strasbourg, à brûlé pendant la guerre de 1870")
