About this work

Description

These long obstetrical forceps are made of steel and ebony. They follow a forceps design by Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1870), a Scottish physician and obstetrician. The forceps are longer and heavier than his short type forceps. They delivered babies from higher up the birth canal. Simpson’s long and short forceps were adapted in many later designs.
